When I was growing up, trying to have hair I didn't have, straightening it, using heat, I was actually ruining what I was given. It was when I realized I needed to stop trying to be somebody else and be myself, I actually started to own, accept and love what I had. Tracee Ellis Ross
It seems somewhat trivial when you call it a curly hair movement, but when you look at it in the context of the culture of beauty, and expanding our definition of what is considered beautiful, I think it has a larger impact. Embracing a larger, more diverse picture of what it means to be beautiful, that curly hair, natural hair, coarser textures, all fall within the context of beautiful. And for that, I am very grateful that's happening. Tracee Ellis Ross
Deep conditioning regularly and making sure the products you use don't have alcohol in them are really important. Also, I usually only [use] shampoo [in] my hair once a week. I often just rinse my hair, I do the same motion as if shampooing, but just with water, and then conditioner again for hydration. Tracee Ellis Ross
I feel that feminism has evolved in a different way and I think feminism started, which is what it needed to do, it was about taking on the roles of men and shifting into that patriarchal society. We are in a different situation now. I like to term it ‘neofeminism’. But I personally have no interest in being a man. I am owning my femininity as a woman and my power in that. Tracee Ellis Ross
